Before you start lessons
Before you can start driving lessons or apply for a theory test you must obtain a valid provisional driving licence (see below for details). However, you can start preparing for your theory test straight away by registering for a free trial of our online Student Learning Hub or installing our free trial app.
Obtaining a provisional driving licence
You can obtain a provisional driving licence application form from LDC by clicking request provisional application form or calling our free phone 0800 400 777 or by visiting your local post office. Alternatively, if you want to apply direct click on DVLA online provisional licence application.
You can apply for your provisional car driving licence up to three months before your sixteenth birthday (however, it would not become valid until you were seventeen unless you receive disability living allowance at the higher rate in which case it is sixteen). Although you can start your driving lessons as soon as your provisional driving licence becomes valid, you cannot book the driving test until you have passed the theory test.
